Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs are in the middle of a goalkeeping crisis ahead of Wednesday’s league game against Golden Arrows.
According to the Soccer-Laduma website, the Amakhosi’s first choice ‘keeper, Itumeleng Khune, is still recovering from the ankle injury that has kept him out for a number of weeks, while his understudy, Reyaad Pieterse, is doubtful after the injury he picked up in the 2-0 win over AS Vita at the weekend.
Pieterse, who has deputised in Khune’s absence, collided with the post during the game, and while his body is fit to play, his eye remains badly swollen, and is currently unable to see through it.
With Khune and Pieterse both unable to feature against Arrows, Brilliant Khuzwayo is expected to take his place between the posts, just as he did when he came on for Pieterse on Saturday night.
However, with Khuzwayo in goal, that leaves Chiefs without a goalkeeper on the bench, something that may prompt them to promote, and maybe register, one of their youngsters.
After the Vita game, Stuart Baxter mentioned that they would be letting some of the young goalkeepers train with the first team, and they may now look to give one of them a spot on the bench in case something happens to Khuzwayo.
Young Shandu Mulovhedzi is believed to have done well in the Glamour Boys’ youth set-up in recent months, and could be the player that gets the nod ahead of tonight’s PSL clash.
