Gaxa a step closer to Chiefs

Soweto - Bafana Bafana right-back Siboniso Gaxa took a step closer to joining Kaizer Chiefs on Friday when his Belgian side Lierse agreed to let him leave.

The 28-year-old now just has to agree personal terms with the AmaKhosi for the transfer to go through when the window re-opens next month.

"The deal is done on the Lierse side, it is now just to tie up things at the Chiefs end," a source close to the deal told SuperSport.com

Gaxa’s arrival at Chiefs leaves an uncertain future for former skipper Jimmy Tau, as well as Tlou Molekwane, the two current options in the right-back position.

His transfer will end a two year stay in Belgium for the former Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United full-back, who enjoyed regular game-time at Lierse, playing at both right- and left-back, making over 50 appearances for the club.

He has been looking for a move away from the team for much of this season though, and despite interest from Glasgow Rangers in Scotland, has set his heart on a return to South Africa and Chiefs.

His arrival at Naturena would also mean teaming up with new Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter once again.

It was Baxter who gave Gaxa his Bafana debut in a 2006 World Cup qualifier in Cape Verde, when he won Man of the Match in a 2-1 victory for South Africa.

He has since gone on to make 49 appearances for his country and although he has lost the right-back berth in the national team to Anele Ngcongca, remains an important squad member for national coach Pitso Mosimane.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
