Fans pile in for Soweto Derby

Johannesburg - There was a constant flow of fans entering the stands before the kickoff of the Soweto derby, between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

On a perfect summer's day, there were already easily 20 000 fans in attendance with over an hour to go before the start. Over 90 000 fans were expected to fill the sold-out Premiership fixture.

The pitch was still receiving constant attention, with ground-staff applying green-coloured soil to areas of the field which had become discoloured. The surface itself appeared even and consistent throughout.

Heavy traffic in the surrounding Nasrec area meant fans made their way to the stadium early to avoid the final crush before the game was due to start at 15:30.

Fans wearing a colourful variety of outfits were present, including those in yellow overalls and worker hats in support of Chiefs.

Buccaneers fans were vocal with their vuvuzelas and sported traditional black and white clothing.
