A sold-out venue was expected, with more than 70,000 supporters expected to pack the iconic 2010 Fifa World Cup arena.
Supporters sporting memorabilia, vuvuzelas, flags, badges and headgear found their seats earlier in the day in anticipation for the arrival of the fierce rivals.
A unique occurrence in world soccer, the two clubs' supporters are not designated separate seating areas, but, instead, sit together around the ground, regardless of their allegiance.
In England, in particular, supporters are kept strictly apart for fear of altercations between the camps and fan violence erupting in the stands.
Players from both Pirates and Chiefs had taken to the field to soak up the atmosphere, before heading out for their warm-up routines as kick-off approached.
The pair had already met earlier this season, with the contest ending in a 1-1 draw in October last year, as Kermit Erasmus and Kingston Nkhatha netted on the day.
