Draws not a worry for Bucs

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates coach Augusto Palacios says back-to-back goalless draws have in no way derailed the team's PSL title challenge.

The Buccaneers had a great chance to stretch their lead at the top of the Premiership standings to four points following Mamelodi Sundowns' 1-0 defeat at Maritzburg United, but the Sea Robbers were unable to find a way past a resolute Bidvest Wits on Saturday evening.

That result marked the Soweto giants' second successive goalless draw, the first coming against Moroka Swallows last week, but Palacios says if his side are not losing, then they are collecting valuable points.

"We are still on top of the table, correct?" Palacios said in The Sowetan. "We are accumulating points. We have our destiny firmly in our own hands. We don't care what happens with the other contenders. The most important thing is not to lose."

Pirates face a tricky run-in to the season's climax, with Ajax Cape Town away on Friday night, followed by another trip, to SupeSport United, the following Tuesday.

The defending champions will have to do without midfield maestro Oupa Manyisa through suspension this weekend, but Palacios is confident he has the players capable of filling the void.

"We have a difficult game coming up (against Ajax) but I am not worried about Manyisa's suspension. We have 35 players. Our strength is in our depth," he added.

"If a player doesn't perform I will put another one and it is a clear message. The message is clear and every member of the squad knows that."

Pirates travel to the Cape Town Stadium to take on the Urban Warriors this Friday, with kick off scheduled for 20:00.
