Pretoria - Goals from Khama Billiat, Themba Zwane and Teko Modise helped Mamelodi Sundowns to a 3-1 Absa Premiership win over Tshwane rivals SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening.
SuperSport opened the scoring through Dove Wome, but ‘Downs fought back to secure all there points against Matsatsantsa, who had Thuso Phala sent off just before the hour mark.
Wome continued the trend of Sundowns players scoring against their parent club, with the on-loan SuperSport United midfielder following in the footsteps of Eleazar Rodgers and Thamasanqa Sangweni.
The Togo international ran onto a through ball by Thuso Phala before rounding Kennedy Mweene and finishing with aplomb in the 17th minute, 1-0.
Wome almost grabbed his brace three minutes later. Mweene spilled Sibusiso Khumalo’s shot from range into the path of the midfielder, who failed to put away the rebound.
The Brazilians pulled level through Billiat in the 32nd minute. Cuthbert Malajila nodded Zwane’s cross into the path of the unmarked Zimbabwe international, who made no mistake from close range.
Pitso Mosimane’s men continued to bombard the Matsatsantsa goal and took the lead through Zwane on the stroke of half-time. The Bafana Bafana midfielder forced Ronwen Williams into a superb save, before finding the back of the net on his follow-up attempt, 2-1 at the break.
SuperSport were dealt a further blow in the 59th minute after Phala received his marching orders for lashing out at Billiat.
Modise wrapped things up for the hosts in the 74th minute. His first-time effort from the edge of the area took a wicked deflection, which completely wrong-footed Williams who just stood and watched the ball bulge the back of the net.
The win moves Sundowns up to fifth place on the league standings while SuperSport drop to 11th.
