Disappointment for Swallows

Soweto - Moroka Swallows beat Maritzburg United 1-0 through a goal by Lefa Tsutsulupa in the second half which proved to be in vain at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon in Absa Premiership.

As early as the third minute Maritzburg had an early chance to open the scoring when Philani Zulu hit a left-footed shot from left wing and missed to the left.

In the 25th minute, Maritzburg again had a opportunity when Michael Morton’s shot from 25-yards went wide of goal to the left.

The league’s top goal scorer Siyabonga Nomvethe should have given Birds the lead in the 25th minute when he turned and shot inside the box from eight-yards, but the ball went over the bar. It was a poor effort from Nomvethe, who should have scored.

Maritzburg had a good start to the second half as De Jong had a shot from outside the box from the left side but his attempt was saved by Swallows ‘keeper Greg Etafia.

In the 56th minute Swallows were in with a shot of opening the scoring. After great work from David Mathebula on the edge of the box, he laid the ball onto Nomvethe who with only the ‘keeper to beat shot high.

Swallows then got the goal they needed in the second half when their inspirational leader opened the scoring.

A great free-kick floated into the box by Lerato Chabangu saw Lefa Tsutsulupa flick the ball into the net past Maritzburg ‘keeper Shu-Aib Walters in the 68th minute.

Swallows were looking for that crucial important second goal when Chabangu took a shot from long range and it was flicked away by the Maritzburg ‘keeper for a corner.

The match ended in disappointment for the Swallows as Orlando Pirates won the league by two points after beating Golden Arrows 4-2.
