Dikwena move into TKO quarters

Johannesburg - Platinum Stars moved into the quarter-finals of the Telkom Knockout thanks to a 1-0 win over Chippa United at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

An own goal by the Chilli Boys’ captain James Okwuosa in the 85th minute ensured Dikwena went through to the quarterfinals of the TKO cup.

The goal was a result of brilliant play by the home side from the middle of the park where midfielder Mahlatse Makudubela’s cross was deflected by the captain into the far corner.

The visitors dominated the first half and showed hunger, but Stars nearly took the lead as early as the sixth minute when United goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela saved Eleazar Rodgers’ effort.

The first half was packed with breathtaking action, but the moment of brilliance came when Stars’ keeper and man-of-the-match Kabelo Dambe pulled a great save from attacks by David Zulu.

Towards half-time, Dambe was the busiest of the two as Bafana Bafana striker Zulu kept knocking in Stars’ 18 area. He beat Rofhiwa Tshikovhi and with only the keeper to beat, a brilliant block by Luvolwethu Mpetha ensured the sides went to the tunnel in a stalemate.

Although the home team came back a better side, their attacks couldn’t trouble the United keeper until Zulu received the ball outside the 18-yard area in the 64th minute – he tried to bend his shot but it went wide.

In the 78th minute both sides slowed down their attacks, with United sitting at the back taking pressure from Dikwena.

Two minutes later, a brilliant pass from Mpho Mvelase saw Zulu in a good position and he placed the ball, aiming to chip Dambe, but a million dollar tackle by Tshikohvi stopped the Bafana striker.

United made attempts in an aim to find an equaliser but Stars were the better side in the second half as they ensured their progress to the next round of the cup.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
