De Sa happy with improvement

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town coach Roger De Sa hailed the 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday, saying it was a vast improvement on their previous two performances.

The Urban Warriors bounced back from a two-match winless run in the Premiership as they narrowly beat Phunya Sele Sele at the Cape Town Stadium.

Grandwald Scott found the back of the net with a magnificent long-range strike on 39 minutes to clinch the three points for the hosts, and De Sa was pleased to see his side respond to the recent 3-0 defeat to University of Pretoria and the 0-0 draw with Maritzburg United.

"You heard that I was disappointed [after the winless streak, but everyone was disappointed. The change-room was disappointed," he said after the match.

"Against Celtic at least it was a bit more of a spirited performance, no doubt about it. All round it was better, we kept the ball a little bit better and we passed it better so I was happy with that.

"And it was a massive team effort because we really had to dig deep to hold on."

The victory also saw the Mother City outfit close within nine points of leaders Kaizer Chiefs, who were held to a surprise goalless draw by Polokwane on Tuesday.

Next up is a trip to Moroka Swallows, and De Sa admits the booking of Abbubaker Mobara against Celtic has handed him a defensive headache, with the centre-back now suspended for next Wednesday's league encounter.

Meanwhile, Rivaldo Coetzee is still struggling with a groin injury, with the 50-year-old tactician wary of rushing him back into action too soon.

Commenting on Coetzee, he said: "It's quite a deep groin injury. So he's being rested and getting a lot treatment. We'll assess him on Monday.

"He's had it before, so it might take a few days to get him right and he might miss the next match.

"Now Mobara is suspended as well, we'll have to see where Rivaldo is on Monday. But with so many games coming up we also don't want to force him back in too soon and lose him."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
