Coach apologises for outburst

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs' coach Vladimir Vermezovic has apologised to a daily newspaper for storming out of a press conference because he thought he had been misquoted.

"I made a mistake because I was given the wrong information," Vermezovic said after his team played to a goalless draw against Platinum Stars at Rand Stadium.

"I did not check, and I must take this opportunity to apologise to the Daily Sun. I was wrong."

In an article published on Tuesday, the Daily Sun quoted Vermezovic as saying Kaizer Motaung Jr had not been playing in competitive matches "because other strikers are better than him".

"Motaung is not injured. He is fine, but I have better strikers," he told the newspaper.

It pointed out that although Motaung jun. - the son of Kaizer Chiefs' founder Kaizer Motaung - captained his side in the Macufe Cup in the Free State, he had not played in Chiefs' three opening league matches, or its MTN8 Cup matches.

Vermezovic was under the misapprehension that the newspaper had quoted him as saying he was a better player than Motaung Jr.

"This situation could cause a division between me and the players and I will not allow this to happen again," Vermezovic said at the press conference at the Kaizer Chiefs Media Day in Naturena on Thursday.

"I never said what I was reported to have said about Kaizer Jr In future I will not talk to the media," he said.

He then stood up and stormed out without answering a single question, leaving even the club's media officers stunned.

However, it turns out that the Serbian coach had not read the article.

He apologised after discovering that he had not been misquoted at all.

"Every word they wrote was my word, but I was given the wrong information that they had said I was better than one of my players," he said.

Vermezovic refused to apologise to the rest of the media at Thursday's conference.

"I apologise to the Daily Sun, but only to the Daily Sun," he said.
