Polokwane - Polokwane City and Maritzburg United played to a 1-1 draw in a PSL match at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

WRAP: PSL

The Team of Choice drew first blood through a first half penalty from Heinrich Isaacks, but Rise and Shine ensured a share of the spoils thanks to Sipho Jembula’s equaliser early in the second stanza.

Polokwane threatened an early goal through former Jomo Cosmos and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Thapelo Tshilo in the fourth minute of the match, but he placed his shot wide of the target.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 19th minute through a penalty from Heinrich Isaacks. Vusi Mthimkhulu was adjudged by the referee to have handled in the 18-yard area and pointed to the spot, allowing Isaacks to put United ahead.

Just past the half hour mark the team from KwaZulu-Natal had a chance to double their lead, but Thamsanqa Mkhize placed his header over the crossbar from a corner kick by the goal-scorer Isaacks.

Half time saw the Team of Choice 1-0 up, but just four minutes into the second half Polokwane found an equaliser through Sipho Jembula, who beat Shu-Aib Walters with a right-footed shot after an assist from Galabgwe Moyana.

Maritzburg made three attacking substitutions in response to being pulled back to 1-1, with Orlando Smeekes, Bhongolwethu Jayiya and Ashley Hartog all making appearances off the bench.

However, the match fizzled out to a draw, with neither side able to take hold of the match in the last quarter.
