Chippa, Amazulu share spoils

Philippi - Chippa United and AmaZulu failed to move away from the relegation zone on the Absa Premiership table when they played to a 1-1 draw at the Philippi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Andile Khumalo put the away side ahead early in the first half, but Chippa’s leading goal scorer Welcome Qalanto netted the equaliser a few minutes into the second half.

The home side fired the first warning shot in the 9th minute through a long distance effort from Qalanto which went wide of the upright.

The opening goal arrived in the 17th minute when Khumalo nudged the ball into the back of the net at the near post following some good interplay between Ayanda Dlamini and Khulegani Madondo.

The visitors came close to doubling their lead in the 26th minute but Kagiso Senamela fired his shot wide, before Ayanda Dlamini was denied by a good save from Kassaly Daouda four minutes later.

Chippa’s only chance in the first half came through a volleyed shot from fullback Tshepo Tomanyane, which was tipped over the crossbar by Tapuwa Kapini as AmaZulu took their slender lead into the break.

However, the hosts leveled matters six minutes into the second half when Qalanto was left unmarked in the centre of the penalty area to fire home after receiving a cross from substitute Mkhanyiseli Siwahla.

Khumalo should’ve grabbed his brace in the 65th minute when he got in ahead of the goalkeeper to meet a cross from Andile Khumalo, but he sent his header over the crossbar.

Three minutes later it was Qalanto who threatened to grab his brace as he fired a shot from inside the penalty area, but Kapini used his leg to deflect the ball wide of goal.

Siwahla should have put his side ahead in the 72nd minute when a shot was deflected into his path on the right side of the box, but he rushed his shot wide of the target.

Dlamini created problems for the Chippa defence and in the 79th minute he was put through by a long pass, but Daouda recovered well to palm his header wide of goal as the two sides were forced to settle for a point each.

Chippa remain in 15th place with 12 points, while AmaZulu also remain at the foot of the table with the same amount of points.
