Chiefs go 13 points clear

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs extended their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership to 13 points following an action packed weekend of league football.

In total there were 14 goals scored across eight games as Chiefs, MP Black Aces, Platinum Stars, Mamelodi Sundowns, Polokwane City and Bidvest Wits won their respective league matches.

The weekend got off to a slow start with Maritzburg United and the University of Pretoria playing to a goalless draw on Friday night. The result sees the Team of Choice drop down to fifth place on the table with 21 points while Tuks are in 12th place on 14 points.

The big match of the weekend got underway on Saturday afternoon as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates locked horns in the Soweto Derby. The Amakhosi ran out 2-0 winners thanks to second half goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala and Siphelele Mthembu. The win sees Chiefs still unbeaten in the league and up to 36 points at the top of the table while Pirates dropped to ninth place with 18 points.

Aces were also impressive on the weekend with a 3-1 win over AmaZulu thanks to goals from Tendai Ndoro, Siboniso Gumede and Zamuxolo Ngalo. Aces are up to seventh on the table with 20 points while AmaZulu still prop up the bottom of the table with seven points.


A goal form Ndumiso Mabena saw Platinum Stars returning to winning ways after beating Moroka Swallows 1-0. The result sees Dikwena up to 13th on the table with 14 points while Swallows are one below them in 14th place with the same number of points.

Sundowns moved up to second place on the log with a 2-0 win over Free State Stars thanks to goals from Cuthbert Malajila and Khama Billiat. ‘Downs now have 23 points while the Ea Lla Koto are second from bottom with 14 points.

Polokwane City continue to surprise all after goals from Tshepo Molala, Rendani Ndou and Dodam Dogere handed them a 3-1 win over Chippa United. Polokwane are up to eighth on the log with 20 points while Chippa dropped to sixth with 21 points.

Sunday’s games only produced one goal as a strike from Ben Motshwari handed Bidvest Wits a 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic. The win sees Wits up to third on the table with 23 points while Celtic dropped to 10th with 16 points.

The last game of the weekend was a dreary 0-0 draw between Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport United. The draw sees Ajax drop to fourth on the table with 23 points while SuperSport are 11th with 16 points.
