Chiefs back to winning ways

Johannesburg - Knowledge Musona scored in the first half and George Lebese in the second as Kaizer Chiefs got back to winning ways with a vital 2-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening in an Absa Premiership match.

Chiefs should have made it 1-0 in the 14th minute when Knowledge Musona wasted a glorious chance. The on-loan Hoffenheim man played a lovely one-two move with his countryman Kingston Nkhatha, but as he pierced the United defence he was one-on-one with the ‘keeper but lazily hit his shot which was saved by Shu-Aib Walters.

In the 36th minute a wonderful chance for The Team of Choice nearly got converted into a goal when Ruben Cloete benefitted from a rebound and let rip a cracker of a shot which fizzled past the goals, with Chiefs ‘keeper Itumeleng Khune certainly beaten.

Maritzburg’s confidence quickly turned into a nightmare as they conceded at the other end a minute later. Tshabalala found space in between the opposition defender and sent in his trademark left footed drive which cannoned off the post, but Musona, who was unmarked at the back post, tapped it home to make it 1-0.

In the 50th minute Maritzburg had a glimmer of hope when Terrence Mandaza’s header was saved by a well-positioned Khune in the Chiefs goals. Ten minutes later the men from KwaZulu-Natal were inches away from an equaliser when Rheece Evans got up well inside the box and directed his header goalwards which just brushed the outside roof of the net.

Chiefs killed off the game with 16 minutes left of the contest. Stuart Baxter’s men broke out on a counter-attack, Sboniso Gaxa cut back the ball for Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who saw his shot saved by the ‘keeper, but Lebese was on hand to finish off the rebound.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
