Chiefs, Birds draw in thriller

Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows have drawn 1-1 in an exciting PSL match at Soccer City.

Both goals came in the second half from Lerato Chabangu and Bernard Parker (penalty).

Swallows got the first chance on goal when, in the third minute, Luvhengo Mungomeni connected with an overhead kick but Man of the Match Itumeleng Khune saved comfortably.

In the 12th minute Chiefs got their first chance on goal when Reneilwe Letsholonyane found Siboniso Gaxa with an excellent pass, and while Gaxa’s first touch was good, Swallows goalkeeper Greg Etafia came out quickly and averted the danger.

Both teams defended deep in the opening half and Swallows looked content to leave Siyabonga Nomvete alone up front.

Then, on the half hour mark, Amakhosi created their best chance of the game. Knowledge Musona got himself into space curled in a shot towards the far top corner, but his direction was just off.

The second half became far more open with both teams having a full go at each other. Six minutes into the second half and Nomvete made space, but just did not get enough curl on the shot and it drifted wide of the far upright.

Then a cross by Dikgang Mabalane found Chabangu against the run of play and Chabangu hit a first time volley to beat Khune in goal.

But within four minutes Chiefs were level. Asavela Mbekile was adjudged to have fouled Musona inside the area on route to goal and Bernard Parker stepped up to convert his penalty.

On 72 minutes, Khune made a very god save to his left to keep out a goal-bound Chabangu free kick and just a few minutes later, Khune once again denied Chabangu from a set piece.

Then either side could have won the game as plenty of scoring chances went begging.

First, Nomvete could only shoot straight at Khune when in an excellent position. On the other end Musona put a shot wide of the far post from a very good position.
