Celtic charge Mulenga

Johannesburg - Bloemfontein Celtic will haul midfielder Clifford Mulenga in front of their disciplinary committee (DC) over the "unnecessary" red card earned against Santos on Sunday, the club said.

“As the club we are very disappointed about Mulenga’s unsporting behaviour and we will take action against him," Celtic chief executive Khumbulani Konco told the side's website on Tuesday.

Mulenga received his marching orders for dissent in injury time with his side 2-0 ahead in their Premier League match in Botshabelo.

The player is crucial to the Celtic plans, and will now miss their next two matches because of suspension, starting with the fixture against Kaizer Chiefs in Polokwane on Wednesday.

"We believe it was unnecessary for him to get that red card; it should have been avoided," Konco said.

"The match was almost over as there was only a minute left in referee’s additional time.

"Mulenga will appear before the club’s DC, charged for unsporting behaviour.

"We want to hear his side of the story."

Mulenga, the talented Zambian international, has had his career tainted by a poor discipline record.

He was kicked out of Zambia's Africa Cup of Nations squad midway through the tournament in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon last month.

Chipolopolo ended up winning the continental showpiece, with their coach Harve Renard vowing never to field Mulenga again.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
