Cardoso taken aback by call-up

Cape Town - Free State Stars defender Daniel Cardoso is grateful for the opportunity presented to him by Shakes Mashaba, who included him in the Bafana Bafana squad for the friendlies against Nigeria and Swaziland.

Cardoso has encountered considerable adversity during the past 18 months, having struggled to recover from a shin injury, which had plagued him before.

Even during the current Premiership campaign, the defender did not have many opportunities to compete for his club.

However, late 2014 and early 2015 have been good to Cardoso and now he has been recognised for all of the hard work he has put into his recovery and into his game.

“I’m surprised, haven’t heard anything about this and I’m already feeling nervous, have goose bumps,” he told African Football.

“I’m happy and really not sure what to say for now as I didn’t expect this you know - getting a call-up is something big for any player."

Throughout this season Cardoso has been a part of a Stars team struggling to consolidate its position in the Premiership. It can be argued that this struggle has helped build his character.

“I think although we didn’t have a good season as a team, packed with ups and downs, I still managed to keep working hard," he added.

“Credit goes to my teammates, technical team and our supporters, I also want to thank the national team coaches for this opportunity. I aim to give it my best and hopefully I will receive many more, I’m just happy."
