Bucs need defenders - Motale

Cape Town – Ex-Orlando Pirates defender Edward Motale confessed that his beloved Parktown club desperately need centre-backs.

According to Soccer Laduma, the retired 48-year-old says that the Buccaneers defence is a major area that needs improvement ahead of the next season.

“I have read the reports of a new goalkeeper possibly coming on board. I’ve seen the news on Felipe Ovono as well as Bouna Coundoul but what I really think is that Pirates should get young central defenders,” argued Magents.

“You can have a great keeper but if he is exposed by his defence then it’s no use. If you look at some of the goals Brighton Mhlongo has conceded you will see he was exposed.”

‘Magents’, as he is known in the football fraternity, admits that the current crop of centre-backs are running out of steam and the Sowetan giants are in dire need of youthful legs.

“Guys like Siyabonga Sangweni and Rooi Mahamutsa are old and they will struggle against young attackers. I think the depth they have in Mhlongo and Siyabonga Mpontshane is enough.”

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
