Booth reveals rival interest

Johannesburg - Matthew Booth has revealed there is "interest up country" in his services, but he hopes to extend his stay at Ajax Cape Town.

The towering defender, who scored five goals in 17 games this past season, is effectively a free agent with the campaign expiring at the weekend.

Booth told Football411.com: "Ya, my contract is coming to an end and I hope to know shortly.

"I've had interest from up country but I will give first choice to Ajax.

"The football people here want me to stay so we'll see what happens."

The 35-year-old, capped 37 times for South Africa, has ruled out the possibility of retirement just yet.

"Basically I will play it by ear. At my age if you get a bad injury, then you might have to reassess," he said.

"I've shown this season that I can play a season, so I'll take it season-by-season," concluded the Fish Hoek-born centre-back.

Booth signed for the Urban Warriors in November, and went on to impress after his career nearly ended with a serious knee injury while at Mamelodi Sundowns.
