PSL clubs must improve

Cape Town - Derek Blanckensee, the general manager of the Premier Soccer League, said South African teams still had a considerable amount to prove in CAF competition next season.

Just one South African team has won the CAF Champions League before, and that title was won by Orlando Pirates two decades ago. Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have since made appearances in the tournament final but both teams have failed to cross the final hurdle.

Blanckensee said South Africa still needs to prove that it has the best league on the continent and the only way to do that is the conquer Africa.

"Our clubs must prove themselves in Africa by winning the African tournaments, and that will show that the standard of football is very much higher," Blackensee told Kickoff.

There are definitely signs that things will improve next term, especially after Pirates advanced deep into the competition last year.

The onus will now be on Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs to continue flying that flag next year and perhaps go one step further than Pirates.

"Orlando Pirates did an exceptional job last year so that will also be a good measure of our success," added Blackensee.
