The Orlando Pirates technical team has been dealt a huge blow with the news that Benni McCarthy picked up an injury at training. McCarthy was expected to play a part in the team’s midweek fixture against SuperSport United, which Bucs won 1-0, however was forced onto the sidelines instead.
News reaching the Siya crew is that the former West Ham United player picked up an injury at training ahead of the game. McCarthy has struggled with injury this season, since being injured in Brazil while on tour with Bafana Bafana.
Last season the 35-year-old played a key role in the club’s treble season, however has been unable to contribute as much this campaign. Bafana’s all-time leading goal scorer has made only two league starts for the defending league champions so far in the season.
Another Pirates player still struggling with injury is Moeneeb Josephs. The 32-year-old missed out on the opportunity to represent his country during the Afcon due to injury.
“Josephs is not training with the team. He is injured. Benni is also injured. He picked up an injury on Tuesday at training. He was doing well, and it’s a pity he’s injured again,” said a source.
The degree of McCarthy’s injury is yet to be established, however coach Roger de Sa will be hoping to have him available for selection as soon as possible.
