Benni back in training

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates star Benni McCarthy has recovered from the hamstring strain he suffered just before the Premiership break.

The 34-year-old, who excelled in Pirates' Telkom Knockout success, hurt himself in a 2-0 league victory over Golden Arrows in December.

However, Bafana Bafana's record scorer is back in contention, so says Bucs team doctor John Williams.

"You will remember Benni (McCarthy) suffered a hamstring strain against Lamontville Golden Arrows in the last match of 2011, but he is fine and training," he told the club's official website.

"We are very happy the team is looking good and we are looking forward to our second week at work and so are the players."

Pirates resumed training last week, and Williams says most players are at an acceptable level of fitness.

He said: "First and foremost let commend the boys for being in the condition there are in, because it's not easy to be disciplined with what you consume during the festive season. The boys are really looking good and their fitness levels are acceptable, which makes it easy for us to continue from where we left off last year.

"Obviously, you will always find one or two guys who let it go. Without mentioning any names, we had two who had gained 3-4kg when we started on Monday. However I can tell you know that they have made a great progress by the end of the week."

In injury news, only long-term casualty Happy Jele remains on the sidelines with a knee complaint.
