Benni: It feels good to win

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates striker Benni McCarthy feels his double awards scoop at the Premiership's season-ending ceremony last weekend has finally proved his critics wrong.

The Buccaneers ace rounded off a superb PSL treble-winning campaign by scooping the Goal of the Season award, as well as the Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament accolade, bagging a cool R250 000 on the way.

McCarthy, Bafana Bafana's all-time record goal scorer, had come under heavy criticism following his move to the Soweto giants at the beginning of the campaign, but the former West Ham and Porto ace feels he has proved himself this term.

"It feels good to win these awards especially at my age. I know most people thought I was finished but I have proved them wrong this season. I would like to thank my team-mates for the warm welcome they gave me when I was signed and for helping me settle in smoothly", he told the PSL's official website.

"I have won many individual awards throughout my career and these two awards are as special as the others. I did very well in the Telkom Knockout tournament and yes I scored some crucial goals for the team, but I must say that teamwork a major part in the victory and I cannot take the credit alone.

"I also feel honoured to receive the Goal of the Season award even though I really did not expect it. I have seen some great goals this season, not only the ones that were nominated, so you will agree with me when I say that this award could have gone to anyone."
