Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has shouldered the blame for his side’s Absa Premiership 3-1 loss to Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday night.
According to the Soccer-Laduma website, the Mighty Amakhosi were handed only their second defeat in their league campaign and Baxter admits his team struggled on the night and were probably guilt of counting their chickens before they hatch.
Baxter, though, is not shying away from his duties and takes full responsibility for the loss, saying he and his players should probably have done better.
“Well at the moment my thoughts are not very positive,” said Baxter after the match.
“We really battled all night. Our possession wasn’t as good as it is usually, I don’t know if it was because of the pitch or because of nerves.
“We battled in the first half, but we gave as good as we got, but when they got the goal I think we started panicking a little bit and then we carried that on into the second half.
“We got a goal back and really I let the players down a little bit because we went for it from the bench. We went with three central strikers and we went for it.
“It is a disappointing evening all round, but both the players and myself can do better than that.
“It is just one of those evenings where you are thinking what may have been and I think maybe we are guilty of looking at the finishing line to you soon and that produced too many errors.”
The result leaves Chiefs still three points clear of Platinum Stars at the top of the table with two games to go, but they can ill afford any more slip ups if they want to lift the league trophy.
