Baxter prefers outfield captain

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has revealed his preference for the team captain has always been an outfield player, rather than a goalkeeper.

Amakhosi were captained by central defender, Tefu Mashamaite, in the recent campaign after he took over the armband from the injured Itumeleng Khune.

Mashamaite went on to lead the Glamour Boys with aplomb, steering them to a Premiership and MTN8 double.

Even when Khune returned from injury for a few games, Mashamaite remained team leader, and he may well retain the armband going into next season.

"I've always thought that an outfield player makes a better captain than a goalkeeper because he's closer to the action, but only if he's a good captain," Baxter told Soccer Laduma.

"Itu was a good captain, but we didn't know if he was going to go straight back into the team so I spoke to him and we agreed to leave it with 'Masha'. It never became an issue."
