Baxter: Itu must fight for place

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter is refusing to offer Itumeleng Khune any assurances that he’ll be restored to the starting line-up any time soon.

An ankle injury has forced Khune to watch from the sidelines for a large portion of this season, while understudy Brilliant Khuzwayo has taken his chance with both hands, not only performing well for Chiefs, but also being called up to the national team.

And, as Khune’s contract comes to an end in June, Baxter is offering the former Bafana Bafana captain no guarantee that he will be recalled to the starting line-up.

"Itu will have to wait like any other player in the team," Baxter was reported as saying by Isolezwe.

"He won't just walk straight into the starting line-up because Brilliant has been fantastic for us, and he hasn't disappointed.

"If we can still win our games with Khuzwayo in between the sticks, then I don't see the need to change him," said Baxter.

Khuzwayo is currently with the South Africa national team at the African Cup of Nations ion Equatorial Guinea. In his absence, Khune featured in last week’s friendly game against Hoffenheim, which AmaKhosi lost 1-0.
