Cape Town - AmaZulu public relations officer Philani Mabaso gave fans a boost by revealing head coach Steve Barker will lead the team's fight to regain its Premiership status.

Usuthu are undergoing a time of major upheaval as they prepare for life in the National First Division following their relegation this term, and the announcement that Barker will remain at the club provides some much-needed continuity.

"At this stage as we are busy with many meetings," Mabaso told KickOff.

"The coach Steve Barker is staying with the club and the sponsors have committed to stay on.

"That is the only confirmation I can give you now. Other than that nothing has changed."

Meanwhile, the players who will remain at the club is set to be revealed at the end of the month.

The contracts of Mbulelo Mabizela, Bongani Ndulula, Robyn Johannes and Khulekani Madondo all expire in June.

While Johannes has expressed his desire to remain at the AmaZulu, it is likely the other three will look for contracts at clubs in the Premiership.

Ayanda Dlamini has also committed to the Usuthu cause, but Goodman Dlamini's form this season has attracted the interest of several top flight clubs and it will be difficult for the club to retain his services.

Bafana Bafana fullback Marc van Heerden reportedly has options open to him in the Premiership, but he is unlikely to make any decision until he has finished international duty with South Africa at the COSAFA Cup.
