Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates striker Lennox Bacela has revealed that it is his ambition is to win the PSL title next season.
The 31-year-old target man also revealed that he will be most delighted to see the Soweto giants reaching every cup final on offer, as they did last season, and win at least two of the those competitions in the upcoming campaign.
The former Bloemfontein Celtic forward helped the Buccaneers reach the final of the MTN8, Telkom Knockout, CAF Champions League and the Nedbank Cup.
From those four competitions, the Buccaneers won only the Nedbank Cup under new coach Vladimir Vermezovic.
Notably, Bacela won the Telkom Knockout golden boot after scoring five goals in the tournament.
The former Santos man was also a joint top scorer in the MTN8 alongside Robert Ng’ambi and Siphelele Mthembu of Platinum Stars, each scoring three goals.
In an exclusive interview with Sport24 on Monday, the Eastern Cape-born player hinted that he intends to improve from last season where his momentum as the club’s leading goal scorer was interrupted by injuries.
Bacela enjoyed the first half of last season when he grabbed ten goals in all competitions in the opening fourteen games.
“I started the last season very well,” said Bacela.
“I was the club’s top goal scorer at the beginning of the season. Then I had a major setback due to injuries. I then lost the momentum and I even missed the Nedbank cup final last season because I was injured. For me that was a setback. Next season it would be great if I stay injury free.
“As a player I would like to see myself playing regularly and contributing to the team success. I’d love to score goals and hopefully be the club’s top goal scorer at the end of the season. But I’ll be happier if we win the league as a team.”
Pirates finished the season 4th on the log and Bacela believes that their involvement in the 2013 CAF Champions League played a part in their disappointing league campaign as they had to play plenty of catch-up matches.
“It was a tough and a long season for us, considering the fact that we played a greater number of games than any PSL team last season. Also considering our journey in the African Champions League. Then we had to play lots of catch-up matches domestically. It’s always hard to be behind. But overall I was impressed by managing to reach all cup finals,” said Bacela.
Bacela joined the Happy People in July last year from Celtic.
He managed to find the back of the net 13 times in all competitions in his maiden season at Pirates.
