Ajax escape dreaded drop

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town ended the season on a high beating Golden Arrows 3-0 on Saturday to ensure they escaped the promotion/relegation playoffs.

Mabhuti Khanyeza was the hero of the day, scoring two goals to take his tally to six from the last five matches.

The hosts started the game in a positive vein and were rewarded after just nine minutes, thanks to a typically well-worked goal.

The ball made its way down the right flank, with several passes being exchanged before Khama Billiat squared the ball for Khenyeza, who had the relatively simple task of tapping the ball home.

Arrows had their moments in attack but never really threatened the goal after some poor finishing.

The remainder of the first half was a tense affair, and Ajax could have added a second just before the break, but Billiat’s finish was poor.

The second half saw some nervy play from both sides with some anxious moments in both side’s defences.

The Urban Warriors had the first chance of the second stanza but could not add to their tally as Khenyeza curled an effort just wide after some good work by Brazilian player Wanderson.

Arrows pushed hard for an equaliser but could not get past a determined home defence.

The hosts always looked threatening on the break though and made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute when Khenyeza broke into the box and picked out substitute Toriq Losper, who finished with a clinical half volley.

Khenyeza then added a third goal, three minutes before the end of regulation time, showing good composure to net from 12-yards out with a low finish.
