Ajax fire coach Stekelenburg

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town head coach, Maarten Stekelenburg, has been relieved of his duties at the club.

The Urban Warriors have been on a horrendous run of late and currently sit second bottom of the PSL table after a disappointing 5-1 defeat at the hands of University of Pretoria.

Ajax fans reacted angrily to the home defeat to Tuks and the Siya crew recently reported that his future was hanging in the balance and that he could be out of a job by the end of the week.

Now, in a press conference, the Cape Town-based side have confirmed that the Dutchman will no longer be at the helm of the club and that a search for a new coach will begin.

The club’s CEO, George Comitis, explained, "As of today, coach Maarten Stekelenburg will no longer be the head coach of Ajax Cape Town. We haven't decided on Stekelenburg's replacement yet, we will look for someone with Dutch influence and SA experience. It was a tough decision that was made over the past 19 games, we will find ourselves in trouble if we don't fix it now!"

Comitis added, "We would look at bringing back someone like Foppe, but we have no inroads to a decision as of yet."

Former head of technical affairs and current chief scout, Jan Pruijn, will stand in for the club’s next game, against AmaZulu, this weekend.
