Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits will battle for place in the semi-finals of the 2015 Nedbank Cup when they meet at Athlone Stadium.

Ajax’s path to last eight has seen them defeat lower league side Mainstay United 9-1 (the biggest win of this year’s competition) in the last 32 and Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in the previous round.

Wits, meanwhile, have taken down two successive top flight sides. First they edged Free State Stars on penalties in the last 32 after a goalless draw, before crushing University of Pretoria 3-0 in the previous round’s ‘Varsity Derby’.

Ajax and Wits have been regular combatants in the PSL down the years, but this will be just their third cup clash.

Their first was in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Absa Cup, with the Urban Warriors winning 5-4 on penalties after the teams played to a 1-1 draw after extra time.

The teams met again in the second round of the 2007 Absa Cup (which Ajax went on to win). The Cape side claimed a narrow 1-0 home victory thanks to a goal from Russell Mwafulirwa.

In all, the teams have met in 32 league and cup matches since 1999/2000.

Ajax have a slight edge in head-to-head terms, with 11 wins compared to 10 for Wits.

The Cape side has won eight of their 17 home matches against the Johannesburg club, suffering four defeats in the process.

The teams have met twice in the league this season. Their first clash in Cape Town back in August last year saw the Urban Warriors claim a 3-1 victory.

The return game saw the Clever Boys take revenge with a 4-2 victory at Bidvest Wits Stadium, with Bafana Bafana attacker Sibusiso Vilakazi scoring a hat-trick.

Kick-off is at 20:00 on Friday, April 10.
