Ajax CEO pays tribute to Benni

Johannesburg - Ajax Cape Town CEO George Comitis has shared the best memories he has for Benni McCarthy, following the striker’s retirement from professional football.

According to the Soccer-Laduma website, Benni announced the decision to hang his boots through his agency after a long and successful football career, and Comitis has showered the striker with praise.

He said, “He’s been an absolute wonder in South African football. If it wasn’t for him I don’t think we would have Ajax Cape Town today. He was definitely the catalyst in making the deal happen between Ajax Amsterdam and Ajax Cape Town. For us, he’s a very special person and he will always remain that."

The 35-year-old is Bafana Bafana’s record goal scorer with 31 international goals under his name. McCarthy scored 10 league goals that helped Orlando Pirates win their second treble in succession in his first season with the club during the 2011/12 campaign.

The Hanover Park-born star has winner’s medals in the UEFA Champions League and World Club Cup. He played for some of the best clubs overseas, including Ajax Amsterdam and FC Porto.
