Musona calls it a day

Johannesburg - Former Kaizer Chiefs striker, Knowledge Musona, has sensationally quit international football, following the match-fixing allegations levelled against him by the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa).

The TSG Hoffenheim striker, who is on loan at Augsburg, said he would not be available for selection, for Zimbabwe’s Warriors, until Zifa publicly apologised for the accusations.

The 22-year-old was accused of fixing Soccer World Cup qualifiers against Guinea and Mozambique, after missing a glut of chances in the matches Zimbabwe failed to win.

“Our client has instructed us to advise your good office that he shall not be available for selection for duty with the Warriors’ pending ‘investigations’, which apparently have not commenced to date (since he has not been interviewed),” wrote Musona’s lawyers to Zifa.

“In the event that our client is cleared by any investigation(s), he would only be available for national duty on the following conditions:

a) That your good office proffers an unequivocal apology and ensures that such apology is given equal or better prominence by the media; and
b) That your good office communicates in writing with FIFA confirming our client’s clearance and furnish us with a copy of such communication,” added the lawyer.

Musona ,along with former Chiefs team-mates Thomas Sweswe and Zhaimu Jambo, were allegedly spotted with the former Zifa chief executive officer, who is said to be the mastermind behind the Asiagate match-fixing scandal that has rocked Zimbabwean football.

Apart from World Cup qualifiers, Musona has been instrumental in the Warriors’ African Cup of Nations bid, having netted all of Zimbabwe’s goals.
