Mhlongo to walk out of jail?

2010-11-04 10:34

Johannesburg - Benson Mhlongo is set to walk away from the unlicensed gun saga unscathed as one of the suspects intends to confess.

The Orlando Pirates midfielder was arrested along with five others when their vehicle was pulled over by police last month.

During the search, the firearm, which was reportedly loaded with 13 bullets was found in the boot of a white BMW, which belongs to Mhlongo.

On Wednesday, the case was postponed in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court.

Captain Leonard Hlathi revealed one of the suspects was willing to come clean. "The case has been postponed for further investigation. The firearm still needed to go to ballistics," he said.

"It is definitely not Benson Mhlongo who wanted to confess that the firearm belonged to him but because we have already sent it to ballistics, we need to get the results first."

Siyabonga Mhlongo, 33, Thokozani Mbatha, 24, Mlungisi Timothy Nkosi, 22, Precious Busisiwe Bunde, 20, and Millicent Ngobese, 22 - are the other suspects.

They were all released on R1000 bail, apart from Siyabonga Mhlongo, who had a pending murder case against him. He had to pay double the amount.

The Bucs star and his co-accused will appear in court again on November 17.

These guys are a joke, but because they have connections with ANC heavy weights theyh'll all walk free. Ho could Mhlongo not be aware who is the owner of the fire arm when he owns the vehicle? When I carry passengers in my car i know which laggage belongs to which paseenger and it is easy to identify from which laggage the fire arm comes out of. Someone must account, but then this is ANC government of the most corrupt province in SA, Mpumalanga...anything is possible.

a pending murder case against him, arrested with a loaded illegal weapon, and he gets off on bail of only R2000-00 ??? Tell me this is not true. This is why our countries murder and violent crime rate is so high. This is not fair and reasonable on the law abiding citizens and tax payers who fund the Govt. and police and Justice department salaries. And di they check whether his taxes were up to date? This government needs to be changed. Come people, yes all people, especially the man in the street, vote for a party and people that will provide school, hospitals, infra structure and law and order. Vote out the current band

I think you are not clever. If you drive a car you give a lift to people you trust and if they have a stolen/illigal gun is not your fault, but you will be arrested as a drive of the car, but that does not mean you own that gun. get it

  • tshepo likobo - 2010-11-04 11:29

all the best to Mhlongo and I realy hope he has nothing to do with this saga for it ll ruin his talent.

I smell a payoff! "It is for the greater good!" What Nonsense!

  • PM - 2010-11-04 12:02 the question here is, did the police give them a chance to explain who the firearm belongs to. It could be they were made to lie down while they searched the car. the earlier reports never mentioned the gun to be ina bag but in the boot. It is clear you are a Cope or DA person

  • - 2010-11-04 12:06

We all know about government officials being corrupt: but honestly in this issue where does corruption come in. The police have done their job; they arrested the people concern; the firearm is sent for ballistics and the matter is still in court. AND IF SOMEONE SAYS THE GUN IS HIS WHAT DO YOU WANT THE COURT TO DO.

  • dave - 2010-11-04 12:25, my brother your comment doesn't make sense. If you are a bunch of friends hanging out the last thing on your mind is to monitor what goes into your boot and this has nothing to do with the ANC or the mpumalanga govr. Get real and abstain from commenting if you have nothing valuable to add

  • MP Boy - 2010-11-04 13:37

@ Tsipa. Tsek san!!! Uya spida san!!!! By the sound of it you don't know about police proceedures and now you want to relate everything to the ANC. Let me not waste my time on you. Moegoe!!!!

  • Adams - 2010-11-04 13:40

R 2000 bail, arrested in connection with an unlicensed firearm, has an outstanding case of Murder! WTF. Was the judge his brother? This is pathetic, the judge should be held personally accountable for the actions this rubbish will get up to now!

  • Chimora - 2010-11-04 13:42

My brother tsipa i'm also owning a car and i give people a lift sometimes. There is no time to go and inspect the bag or notice which bag is carried by an individual. I'm not a Pirates Supporter but i do feel Mhlongo is Innocent.Actual let's wait and see becuase the matter is with the police.

thats true,he must know what belongs to whom in his car.Mr Mhlongo must face justice

  • Theo Phutieagae - 2010-11-04 15:14

@, mfana you are dom, Y are you connecting this matter to ANC, I also bet that you can see all the luggages in your donkey cart because it does not have a boot.Let's wait for the ballistic test, maybe they will find out it is really Mhlongo's gun, then the law will take its course.

  • Gail - 2010-11-04 15:35

Nobody has asked what I consider to be the most important question in this whole incident. If Mhlongo was a friend why was his passenger carrying a gun loaded with 13 bullets anyway. Were they planning to use the BMW for a heist or hijacking. Or were they carrying it in case they were hijacked because they were in a BMW. If it was the latter what good was it going to be in the boot anyway? Did the BMW belong to Mhlongo or was it stolen? Now the cops have the gun it will probably get lost and for all we know it had already been used in other offences including murder. And the owner goes free!!! Something stinks here. And it isn't a good stink either.

  • Bucs Faithful - 2010-11-04 16:46
