Liverpool reach Europa semis

2010-04-08 23:05

Liverpool -  Five-time European champion Liverpool cruised to a 4-1 victory over Benfica to overturn a first-leg deficit and reach the Europa League semifinals on Thursday.

Fernando Torres scored twice as Liverpool wiped out Benfica's 2-1 advantage from last week to advance 5-3 on aggregate.

Liverpool will now travel to Torres' former club Atletico Madrid on April 22 and host the second leg the following Thursday.

The 2005 Champions League winners crashed out of the competition at the group stage and the Europa League now offers the only chance of ending a four-year trophy drought.

While Benfica is on course to win the Portuguese title, Liverpool is sixth in the English Premier League, four points adrift of the fourth Champions League spot.

The boys did us proud, even "lazy" Lucas scored a pearl of a goal. but once again we still lacking nerves of steel at the back. MOM Kyriakos. We everywhere and put in important challenges, needs more game time

  • Wes - 2010-04-09 07:42

Well well well... So much for Lucas being useless hey?? And Dirk Kuyt was our best player on the night!! I wonder what their detractors will say now?? And heaven forbid Benitez leads us to European glory... Who cares if it is not the Champions League?? It will be another European trophy in our cabinet!!

  • Nehaa - 2010-04-09 08:06

Well done Liverpool, a well deserved win!!!!!

  • ShAyA - 2010-04-09 08:07

Well played boys, a little bit jittery at the start but well played at the end. Dunno what we will do if Torres decides to leave cos 9 times out of ten if he has the goal posts in sight he scores....a couple of good touches from Lucas though.

  • Wes - 2010-04-09 08:51

Lucas had a stormer last night, scoring one, saving one, and paving the way for another with a great tackle. I don't remember a single player having to do so much to win over the fans. He's improved for me in the last couple of seasons, and is getting more important to the way we play imo.

  • Wes - 2010-04-09 09:00

@ ShAyA Torres will NOT leave at the end of this season... I think we will more than likely win the Europa League trophy which means he would have won his first trophy with us. I think that if we do not improve next year then he will more than likely leave as he will be in the prime of his career and would want to win titles.

  • Julius - 2010-04-09 09:14

Hey, I wish ManU could buy Torres. he is the best striker in the EPL. Imagine Torres and Rooney, with Nani and Valencia supplying from the sides, YOH, Glory Glory manunited all over again. Torres would look good in a ManU shirt, I mean look what we did for Rooney, imagine if he stayed at everton

  • ShAyA - 2010-04-09 09:47

If Benitez was shrewd enough and the Liverpool board decide to approve a few quid extra I hope to hell we get David Villa, cos maybe he also feeling the same as Torres about Liverpool about not winning enough trophies with Valencia. Then we will definitely be unstoppable...YNWA!!!!!!!!!

  • S - 2010-04-09 10:20

@Wes Lucas is useless, his Second goal in nearly a Year? Last goal scored May 2009? And i'm a Liverpool Fan by Heart but to Bench Babble and Aqualani for him, Benitez should Go before our club loses more Valuable players.

  • Neutral Fan - 2010-04-09 10:46

Well done Liverpool ! Torres is undoubtedly one of the top three strikers in the world alongside Rooney and Messi . Why don't Liverpool play like this all the time ? To prove that this was not some freakish result , Liverpool will have to beat Chelsea by a similar margin in the league . Can they do it ?

  • Ari - 2010-04-09 11:14

to Julius MALEMA keep on Dreaming BUDDY

  • Wes - 2010-04-09 11:47

S And yet Mascherano has been at the club longer than Lucas and only scored 2 goals in over 100 games for us. They are not in the team to score goals!!! You need to catch a wake up boet... Not all midfielders can be a Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard. Look at Claude Makelele, he hardly ever scored goals in the teams he played in but at one stage he was the best holding midfielder in the world... Same with Michael Essien!!!

  • Wes - 2010-04-09 11:49

When we win 4-1 with a clearly not 100% Torres scoring the match winning goals, that's Rafa's brilliant management at work. On the other hand, when Rafa subs Torres in the middle of a must-win game and we draw 1-1 because Torres' replacement blows multiple chances, that's the players' fault. When people criticize Rafa for starting Kuyt for game after game after game when he's playing terribly, those people are knee-jerking simpletons who don't understand the long term . On the other hand, when Kuyt has one excellent game, it proves that Rafa and Kuyt's detractors don't know what they're talking about. I don't want to argue about whether subbing Torres or starting Kuyt every game are actually bad decisions. My point is that a little balance would be nice. Either Rafa deserves both credit and blame or he deserves neither.

  • AL @ Wes - 2010-04-09 13:26

I think you are the only idiot on the planet to support Lucas and Rafa. Yes, he scored a goal (luckily under the keepers arm) - big effing deal and, you are far away from winning the Europa Cup.

  • S - 2010-04-09 14:31

Wes, funny how you can talk of 1 Game you think Lucas played Good. Just because he scored. Mash... has a more defensive game, Lucas runs around like a Headless Chicken. Not even Bafana would want him on their side. Catch a wake up, Lucas is Doesn't fit in the team. What has he done for the team lately, without his SURPRISED goal, we would still have one, make it count when needed. Out Benitez Out Lucas.

  • C - 2010-04-09 14:33

dON'T know why that Idiot Benitez, keeps starting Lucas, he's useless. And to all the Idiots who tinks Lucas is a Good Soccer Player, doesn't know soccer.

  • TRUE Red - 2010-04-09 14:35

Wes, as i said in the other thread this morning, Lucas was outstanding last night. But again, one swallow does not make a summer ! IF he can play with heart like last night, he would be good back up for Masch & Aquilani in midfield, but that was the game of his life & he still didn't look as good as either on an average day, agreed ? Hence me saying great squad player, but never starting 11. Kuyt was also superb, as was Kyriakos & Agger did better at left back than the lightie, Insua. We are still far from the final - PERFECTLY played last night - the whole team was superb, but let's do it again, one game at a time, and see what happens eh ...

  • D - 2010-04-09 14:35

Well done Liverpool, wished you played like that in the League. Brilliant game.

  • Kube$ - 2010-04-09 14:38

Who the Fck even watched this? Sureley, even the Telkom Charity cup has a bigger audience than this, lol.... @WES , OMG, you are a RETARD my man, "Lucas had a stormer last night" WTF man,LUCAS IS A F UP. You are on some lekker stuff my man, making morphine look bad dude, I bet you think Lucas Skywalker is the best player in the world and Rafa is the best manager in the world? FCK SAKE

  • Wes - 2010-04-09 14:42

@ AL I shouldn't even be responding to someone that exaggerates the way you do!! There are loads of TRUE 'match going' Liverpool supporters that rate Lucas and has been defending him for quite some time. It is supporters like you who give the club a bad name. 1 average season out of 5 seasons and you want Rafa to leave. You sir don't know the meaning of supporting a club as fine as Liverpool... You probably only started supporting them since they won the CL in 2005. I've supported them since the early 1980's and have done so through the bad spells (1990's) without fail!!! I suggest you read the words to YNWA and try to capture the true meaning of support!!!

  • S - 2010-04-09 14:56

When you walk through the storm hold your head up high and don't be afraid of the DArk. At the end of the storm............. Know that song by heart, BUT still have no faith in Lucas. Been supporting them too since the 80's But hey if Lucas' your Hero let it be. Its like cheering a Donkey at the Durban July.

  • Wes - 2010-04-09 15:45

@ S I think you should give him the benefit of the doubt. He is still young and has a lot to learn but I think he is being used as a scapegoat even though he doesn't deserve it. You wanna know why Benitez selects the likes of Lucas and Dirk Kuyt in nearly every single game?? Because they get on with it... they dont complain and they give 100% during training and during matches!!! Compare that to the likes of Riera and Bael who mouth off in the press!!! Lucas has been one of our most consistent players and that dear friend is a fact!!!

  • Never Walk Alone - 2010-04-09 17:53

@Wes - You are a d@@@s boet ! When I saw Lucas streaking toward Benfica's goal I was shouting at him to MISS (never ever in 30 years of supporting LFC did I think I would stoop so low ) because I knew that if he gets a goal you would be spewing shite about him again all over this thread - and Benitez (your assistant d@@@@s) will now keep in the side FOREVER ! For f#@&%k sakes this guy is a mullet - but then you strike me as a person who is happy with mediocrity - thus your continuous bs about how good this prick is ! He is ONE of the reasons we are presently sitting 6th on the log - because the prat has NO IDEA how to attack, tackle or defend - he is a f$#@^k liabilitry in the team - not an assest at all !!! GET F&%$#K REAL !! - In my 30 years of supporting Liverpool - I have never seen such a k@k player wear a ;Liverpool jersey - FACT !

  • Wes - 2010-04-10 01:01

Well that says it all doesnt it?? The fact that you hate Lucas and Benitez despite all the good they have done for the club speaks volumes. You are not a true supporter at all. You claim Benitez is at fault for our lack of attacking flair and yet we were the top scorers in the Premier League last season. We thrashed Manure, Madrid, Newcastle, Chel sea, etc and who was the coach?? Which midfielder contributed to those wins last season?? You're a fake, thats what you are!! The club doesnt need your support!

  • Never Walk Alone - 2010-04-10 14:09

@Wes - I support Liverpool Football Club - not the manager or certain players - as they come and go at regular intervals - therefore they only REPRESENT the club during their tenure. LFC do not inherently have bad players - not any less so than other clubs - however, they are mismanaged, played out of position, and their natural skills are being hindered by a manager with negative tactics - which has rubbed off on the players, who now lack the passion of playing in a Liverpool jersey !! Man. U do not have a great team - however Ferguson manages to get his selections right 90 % of the time - and still motivates the players in what it means to be able to don the MU strip - THATS WHY THEY ARE WHERE THEY ARE - AND WE ARE CHASING GHOSTS FROM THE PAST ! Your comments once again proove to be unfounded - thus further convincing me that mediocre and less is good for you and your so called unbridled support of LFC and the fools that run it - and k@k players that have no right to be seen dead in our kit !!

  • Wes - 2010-04-10 14:48

How the hell can you claim to support the club and yet you choose only to support certain players or the manager when you see fit to do so?? Thats just ridiculous!! Like i said, and you refuse to admit that i am right, you claim Benitez is defensive and doesnt have technical nous and yet we finished last season as the leagues top scorers. How do you explain that?? You cant dispute it and that is why you are not commenting on it. All you're doing is making statements without facts. Where are the facts??
