Townsend looking forward to the Euros

Cape Town - Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend is excited by the prospect of representing England at the upcoming Euros in France.

Despite the club's relegation to the Championship, the 26-year-old has been outstanding for Newcastle, after joining the Magpies from Tottenham at the end of the January transfer window.

His form in the second half of the campaign, scoring four goals in 13 league appearances, has earned him a place in Roy Hodgson's 26-man provisional squad ahead of the European Championships next month.

"I am fresh, I have played 13 games this season," Townsend said. "I am gutted the club season has ended because I am just getting into my stride.

"My confidence is back and I'm showing [what I can do] on the pitch and I am devastated the season is over.

"It's great that the call from England has come. I missed out on the last World Cup because of injury.

"Obviously I was down in the dumps because it would have been a dream to go to Brazil. It was an awful feeling to miss out.

"So I am honoured [to get a call-up]. It would make the Euros more special. As a player you want to be in the tournaments. I am desperate to do well for my country as well as my club."
