Cape Town - England head coach Gareth Southgate says the meteoric rise of teenage forward Marcus Rashford is proof that English club's are able to produce top quality footballers like Germany.

The Three Lions face off against the World Champions on Wednesday, who have been lauded for their impressive youth development over the past decade, while English media have often criticised Premier League club's for their lack of faith in local talent.

However, Southgate claims the 19-year-old has proven to be one of the best young forward's in Europe, as he continues impressing for Manchester United under manager Jose Mourinho, citing his performance as a lone striker against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final defeat, as a positive aspect.

"If you look at the squad, we've got young players coming through, not only in this group, but further down," Southgate told reporters.

"I know there has been a lot of talk about Germany and their system, but I think ours is starting to produce a different type of player.

"I thought Marcus was excellent in the game against Chelsea in the game last week. He makes powerful runs in behind defenders and you can ask Gary Cahill how much of a problem that is," the former Middlesbrough boss added.

"We like him. He's not the finished article, obviously. There is still plenty for him to learn but he's an exciting talent and I think we've got a few exciting young talents."

The six-time capped senior international has scored 16 goals in 56 appearances for the Red Devils, since making his debut last season.
