SA officials appointed to referee a CAF match

Cape The - Three South African officials, led by Victor Gomes, will be heading north to Cameroon to officiate a CAF Champions League match between Cotonsport FC and Al Ahly on May, 23.

Gomes will be referring, assisted by his fellow countryman Johannes Moshidi, while another South African official Chris Harrison will be the forth official.

South African Football Association’s (SAFA) chair of Technical Committee, Natasha Tsichlas said the trio is well-informed about the rules of the game and their application of those rules has earned them the recognition.

"They are knowledgeable in the game and they present themselves very well on the pitch," said Tsichlas.

"Both CAF and FIFA have constantly praised our standard of refereeing and how we have helped the continent raise the standard of officiating."

Tsichlas said it had been a great season for refereeing in the country and she is proud of the three.

“As a country, we should be proud. Our referees have done well and we need to credit them for that,” Tsichlas added.

Responding to a public glamour that has been targeted at the referees recently, Tsichlas said officials make mistakes like any other human being.

“Referees are human beings. They also make mistakes. Coaches must understand that teams should play well in order to win and there is no one who will stop them,” she said.

She further said some coaches focus on the officiating instead of the performance of their teams.

“We intend to maintain or even up our game because the general standard of the game is be enhanced with good officiating,” said Tsichlas.
