Newport goalkeeper cuts FA Cup celebrations short as wife goes into labour

Cape Town - Newport County goalkeeper Joe Day made a swift exit after their shock fourth-round FA Cup win over Middlesbrough to attend to his wife who went into labour mid-game on Tuesday.

Fourth-tier Newport will take on Premier League champions Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup after a 2-0 win over Tony Pulis' Championship side.

After the final whistle the goalkeeper - who had no idea his wife, Lizzie had gone into labour - dashed to be by her side as she went into labour during the ninety minutes.

As soon as the final whistle went the 28-year-old asked boss Michael Flynn is he could dash off to in a bid to make the birth of his children.

"I didn't hide it believe it or not!" Flynn told BT Sport. "I didn't hide it, he turned his phone off. As soon as the game was over and we won he said "gaffer thank you so much, can I go please?"
