Cape Town - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said his side's win over Feyenoord in the Europa League was a "happy moment."
“Tonight was a performance and a result,” Mourinho said. “I was saying before the match: Performance without result is not good, but it gives you a future, but performances with good results is a happy moment, but it’s just a happy moment, not a happy future.”
Mourinho said that United were seeking success in Europe, despite not being in the Champions League.
“We always told since day one, we want to do well in the Europa League,” he said. “We were in a position of needing four points and now we need just one.”
Wayne Rooney became the club’s top scorer in European competition with a first-half goal.
“People like him don’t need to answer anymore,” Mourinho added. “He just needs to enjoy the few more years of his career and play the best that he can, which is what he tries to do.
“But again, I think more important than that is the fact that we need one point now to qualify because we want to qualify.”
United are second in Group A, two points behind Fenerbahce and looking for a win or a draw against Zorya Luhansk on December 9 to book their place in the knockout stages.
They face West Ham United on Sunday in the Premier League, where they are sixth, five points off fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Kick off is at 18:30.
