Cape Town - A football club owner accidentally tweeted an X-rated picture of his penis before promptly announcing plans to put the club up for sale on Sunday night.

Notts County owner, Alan Hardy accidentally leaked the image hours before announcing plans to sell the League 2 side to focus on his "external business portfolio".

The 54-year-old apologised after committing the gaffe when he posted two screenshots from a fan, which also included his camera roll featuring the X-rated image.

"This morning an inappropriate photo appeared in one of my tweets. This was clearly an honest mistake as a result of my camera roll being included in a screenshot," he tweeted.

"I tried to rectify the error by deleting the tweet as soon as I noticed and I apologise for any offence caused."

He later added that he would be later deleting his Twitter account as it was in the best interests of the club.

The Magpies confirmed on Sunday night that the club had been put up for sale, while denying that it was related to "events which have unfolded in the media this weekend."
