London - Former Football Association chairperson Greg Dyke feels Arsenal boss Former Football Association chairman Greg Dyke feels Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger would be an ideal candidate to replace former England manager Sam Allardyce.

In an interview on BBC's 5 live Breakfast, Dyke stated his belief that the next Three Lions boss would not necessarily have to be English.

When asked to name some viable candidates for the vacant position, Dyke stated that Wenger would be a "brilliant appointment".

However, he was quick to point out that it would be tough to convince the Gunners board to allow their long-serving manager to leave the Emirates.

"I've never thought he has to be English. I do think he needs to know the English game, which is a different matter.

"If he's been a manager here for a long enough period...

"I know the list that was there last time, there were some good names on it. For one or two reasons some weren't available - maybe some of those will be available."

When asked if Wenger was one such candidate, he added: "Yes. Next question..."

Pressed further on the potential of Wenger taking up the England reins, he said: "Personally I'm a great fan of Arsene Wenger. I think he's done a brilliant job for 20 years, and if he were to leave Arsenal and the FA could get hold of him, he would be a brilliant appointment. But, I mean, that's quite difficult."
