Gyan claims racial abuse

Cape Town - Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has accused an opposition player of racially abusing him in an Asian Football Confederation Champions League semi-final second leg match on Tuesday.

Gyan’s Al Ain FC, from Abu Dhabi, lost 4-2 on aggregate to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, despite winning the game 2-1.

During the match, Gyan was red carded after a two-footed tackle on Salem al-Dawsari. The Al Hilal player’s team-mate, Mihai Pintilii, rushed over to confront Gyan and a shoving match between the two teams ensued.

The Black Stars captain said in an article on his own website, asamoahgyan3.com, that Pintilii had racially abused him during the confrontation.

“The player has no right to tell me what he did,” Gyan said.

“He said something to me which made me upset. He said an abusive word – I really didn’t like it.”

“He knows what he said, you can ask him. He knows what he said.”

Al Ain are expected to lodge a formal complaint with the AFC once they have gathered all the details about the incident.
