Barca coach has appendix op

Cape Town - Barcelona's new 44-year-old coach Luis Enrique has undergone emergency surgery for acute appendicitis, the club said Monday.

"The surgery was carried out satisfactorily and he will be discharged in the next few days," Barcelona said in a statement.

Acute appendicitis is a common but potentially life-threatening medical condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and may be at risk of rupturing.

Surgery involves removing the organ.

Enrique took over as coach on May 19 to replace Gerardo Martino after their first trophyless season in six years.

Enrique himself scored 109 goals in 300 appearances for Barcelona in eight years after joining from rivals Real Madrid in 1996, and also had great success in three seasons as Barca B coach.
