Hyypia set to leave Liverpool

2009-05-04 17:19

London - Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia will join Bayer Leverkusen on a two-year deal at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old Finland center back, who has been at Anfield for 10 years and helped Liverpool win the 2005 Champions League, has lost his place alongside Jamie Carragher since the arrival of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel.

Liverpool said Hyppia underwent a medical with the German club on Monday.

The 1.93-meter Hyppia joined in May 1999 from Dutch club Willem II and became a big favorite with Reds fans after forming a dependable partnership with Stephane Henchoz, helping the team win the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup in the 2000-01 season.

He was made Liverpool captain before the arrival of Steven Gerrard in 2003 and played every minute of 57 consecutive European competition games for the Reds between November 2001 and February 2006.

Hyppia has scored 35 goals in 463 appearances for the Reds, including one in 12 starts this season.

He will be missed. I'm sure that his off-field contributions to the club during his twilight, were even more important than those on it. He still is a very solid defender and could be evergreen like Maldini. Just a pity he wasn't keen on a player-coach deal. Hopefully he comes back after the two years to join Rafa's staff. His experience is invaluable. Walk on Sami. I know you'll do well at Leverkussen.

what a sad day ! Truly a LFC legend who helped us win 10 trophies in his time here & the best LFC defender that i can remember in my time ! Look at the game at Old Trafford - he had 5 minutes notice to get ready when Arby got injured in training - he came in & made a huge impact !

S**** you Anon @ 10:57am. This guy has been and is one the best center-backs in the world and always consistently performs. His records speaks volumes of how good he is. Not many have played "every minute of 57 consecutive" European games. That's amazing for the level of football. He's an awesome player and has served the Reds well. He will go down as one of the Anfield legends. In my opinion, he can still play another 4 years. Pace was never part of his game so he's got none to lose. His tactical awareness is great, and he reads the game well. That's what makes him good. And he will be missed when both Agger and Skyrtel are injured. Look at how well he played against United this season, only finding out 5minutes before the game that he was gonna play. He's world class. Take those words back, Anon. You probably aint a fan of football.

Did Liverpool not beat Arsenal, away, ManU and Chelsea both Home and Away this season? They are the true deserved Premiership champions of 2009 regardless of the next three weeks.
