Gordon wants Benni in Bafana

Moroka Swallows coach Gordon Igesund believes national boss Pitso Mosimane should recall veteran hitmen Siyabonga Nomvethe and Benni McCarthy.

Bafana Bafana, who failed to qualify for the recent AFCON, are on an eight-game winless steak, leaving them 60th in the world rankings and 10th on the continent.

Goals have been hard to come by for Mosimane's outfit, with Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela struggling as their go-to-man of late as evidenced by last week's 0-0 draw with Senegal.

But with Swallows' Nomvethe topping the PSL scoring charts with nine goals (along with Mphela) and McCarthy netting five in eight league showings for Orlando Pirates, Igesund feels the pair can still shine on the international stage.

"Who is the top goal-scorer in the Premier League this season?" Igesund rhetorically asked the Sowetan.

"Nomvethe has scored nine goals this season and continues to work harder in every game. That's all I've got to say really."

But he then continued: "McCarthy not only has a record of scoring goals, but he is doing it in the league this season.

"Why not call these guys in and let them get a couple of goals to bring back the confidence for the other guys in the team? And then take it from there."

The duo, both 34 years old, have 79 caps each and a combined total of 47 goals between them.

Roger Milla played for his country into his 40's. Why not so with our hit-men? Swallow yo pride Pitso...

Now that our call is amplified by a whiteman, maybe Pitso will finally accede.

no, I'm not agree, we need new coach to use the assets which is existing in the squat we dont need verterance. Mphela has the esperience but his coach z not good, I think we should give Hunter a chance 2 prove.

      paulmandlankosi - 2012-03-08 14:00

      Which squat?

      Kgomotso - 2012-03-08 17:26

true we need a new coach Pitso is a waste of space. Look Amazulu, Arrows, Black Leopard and Swallows were at some stage in the verge of relegation Gordon and Mlungisi Ngubane were appointed head coaches the teams started to win games with the same players who were losing left right and centre. The teams were saved from relegation. There is nothing wrong with players Pitso just cant utilise or motivate them to get desired outcome he has to go.

@Sobzihno we have so many youngsters wh are doing good in PSL,when it comes to international games they choke up. "We are building the team for the future" those words are like musical chair in my ears, i have heard them many time. My point is we should never throw those youngsters in a deep end to swim with sharks. We need Benni and Nomvethe to guide this players, get some couple wins and bring confidence back.....these guys still got a lot to offer for the national team. Some countries still use their experience players, why can't we do it. W eknow very well development of soccer in SA is as slow as a snail.

What SAFA need is to rehire that Brazilian coach...the one before Santana. That guy was actually going somewhere with the team and they could score. If not him, then a coach with the same football philosophy.

Forget about fat cat too much of himself.

      Kingsley - 2012-04-03 22:51

steve khompela is after SAFA's money, the only coach who know our players is perreira.Daniel mutsusi

      Kingsley - 2012-04-03 22:55

spitso must keep his eyes peelled,he select the players he's coaching while he's at SSU.Daniel mutsusi Ga mamaila

  • Phila - 2012-03-09 09:51

i have always said it, Gordon is a much better coach than Pitso, i could mention a lot of SA coaches that are far better than Pisto, even Clive Barker is 10 times better than pitso. SAFA has no intention of seeing Bafana Bafana succeed cuz if they had they would have fired Pitso long time ago. Stop being racist weSAFA and hire a white coach like Gordon!

  • Jugzen - 2012-03-15 15:20

Thats true, Pitso think Bafana is spaza shop, he must stop calling those toddlers to join our national team, if he want to build them, he must take them to under 20, now we are laughing stock because of him. always he say "im building squad im building squad" till when? since he joined Bafana from 2006 till now still building. Pitso must take us serius, Bafana is our team not his team. He must call Benny and Nomvete to give this boys experience.
