Gay players urged to go public

Berlin - German international goalkeeper Manuel Neuer expressed his desire on Wednesday for homosexual footballers to go public over their sexuality adding it would take a load off their minds.

The 24-year-old Schalke 04 star told Bunte magazine that supporters didn't care about a player's sexuality, only how he performed on the pitch.

"Yes, those who are homosexual should say so. That would take a load off their minds," said Neuer, who had an outstanding World Cup last year which saw the Germans finish third.

"And the fans would get over it quickly. What is important to them, is the performances on the pitch of the player, not his sexual preferences."

Neuer's plea is rare in football where homosexuality is regarded as a taboo subject, on several occasions Bundesliga players have spoken in the press anonymously about the difficulties they faced hiding the fact that they are homosexual.

The late English player Justin Fashanu is the highest-profile footballer to have admitted he was homosexual.

The talented striker paid for it as Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough - who had convinced the board to pay £1m for him in 1981 - did not take kindly to his revelations and constantly made fun of him, even barring him from training with the squad.

Fashanu's career floundered after his unsuccessful spell there and tragically killed himself aged 37 in May 1998.

Err we don't really care if you are gay or straight. All we want is good football on the pitch. What you do in the locker rooms is your own business.

exactly!!! Just play soccer for shi*sake.

Ag what a load of bollocks. Really, if a guy wants to play soccer and he's good enough why should it matter who he bats for. These gay issues are too much, why should they keep making a fuss, like it's their right to openly state their preference? who gives a damn. Play sport and shut up.

Uhm, will there be any "straight" players left then? I thought all soccer players are gay.

I suppose he's waiting for the first one to come out before he follows suit. He doesn't say which side he bats for does he?

Clough was a genius and often made fun of players to bring out the best in them. He cannot be blamed for what Fashanu did years after he had left Forest ...... My mates made fun of my receding hairline in high school but I never jumped off a bridge !!!

He has a point, it isn't a big deal in my opinion but the longer people hide their sexuality, the longer the myth will persist that it is 'wrong'. Would be nice if a few actors also came out, they make it even worse.

      Bratt - 2011-03-01 08:58

They are not hiding anything. They are just being normal. Normal people dont go around telling people what they do in bed. It's the strange ones that do that. And its annoying.
