‘Free’ Bartlett not retiring

Cape Town - Veteran striker Shaun Bartlett says he is not yet ready to call time on his career, despite having terminated his contract with Bloemfontein Celtic.

It was reported earlier on Tuesday that the 37-year-old former Bafana Bafana striker had requested a transfer after very limited game-time in the Free State.

He had initially moved to Celtic at the start of the year when Mich d’Avray was still coach, but the arrival of Owen da Gama coincided with a sustained spell on the bench. Bartlett reveals it is for this reason alone that he has decided to end his association with Celtic.

“I left Johannesburg with the aim of playing and helping Bloemfontein Celtic out of the relegation mire, but I believe it would be better to return to my family in Johannesburg rather than just sit on the bench here,” he said.

“At my age it is not about the money ... I play football because of my passion for the game. I am fortunate in that I have already secured my future, and have also done lots of investments and TV work,” adds Bartlett, who was reportedly earning in the region of R100 000 per month.

Asked whether he would now hang up his boots, Bartlett hinted that he could be looking for another club.
