FIFA picks GoalControl system

2013-04-02 16:21
FIFA (AFP)
Paris - Football's world governing body, FIFA, on Tuesday said that German company GoalControl will provide the goal-line technology at this year's Confederations Cup in Brazil.

The firm's GoalControl-4D system, which uses 14 high-speed cameras placed around the pitch to track the ball, was chosen ahead of three other bids after a tendering process, presentation and inspections in Brazil, FIFA said in a statement.

The June 15-30 tournament will be the second FIFA-accredited competition in which the technology will be used to determine disputed goal-line incidents, after its use in last year's Club World Cup in Japan.

GoalControl is in the running to provide goal-line technology for next year's World Cup in Brazil "provided that the performance of the system during this year's Festival of Champions meets all necessary FIFA requirements", the federation said.

FIFA said that all four companies, including Britain's Hawk-Eye already in use in tennis and cricket, had all met the technical requirements but their decision was based on "criteria relating more specifically to the tournaments in Brazil".

That included local conditions in the South American country, it added.

Use of the technology is still subject to final tests at each stadium hosting matches while match officials will also carry out their own checks, in line with procedures carried out at the Club World Cup.
