Eto'o beat off competition from Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Asamoah Gyan of Sunderland to be crowned for a record fourth time and in doing so beat the previous record set by Ghanaian football legend Abedi Ayew Pele, who won the title on three occasions.
The Glo CAF African Football awards took place in Cairo on Monday night with the continent's top individual accolade voted for by coaches and captains of Africa's 53 national teams.
Eto'o has been a consistent performer at both club and international level and enjoyed unprecidented success last season when his side won the Italian Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League.
Ghana, who performed so admirably at the 2010 World Cup, scooped a number of the other awards on offer.
The Black Stars were named African National Team of the Year while midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah was named the Young Player of the Year. He follows in the footsteps of Dominic Adiyiah, who won last year.
